Music & Acting Journey
From age 7-8, growing up in the Ashanti Region, Agya Koo knew how to sing songs of old Ghanaian highlife musicians like Nana Ampedu, Alex Konadu, and Obuoba J.A. Adofo. He also learned to play drums and was a drummer at a church he joined in Krofrom, Kumasi. Later, Alex Kofi Adu also became a preacher and started preaching at the Krofrom Market in Kumasi. However, after years of living in Kumasi, he traveled to Accra alone to seek a better life, and at the time, he was 20 years old.
When Agya Koo arrived in the capital city, he settled down with a group of young men from different towns in the Ashanti Region who slept at night in front of a store opposite Asantewaa Hotel at Accra Newtown. Most of these young men he was living in Newtown with were cobblers, and to survive in Accra, he also decided to be a cobbler. But after some time, Agya and some of his cobbler friends relocated to Sakumono Estate, where they continued their hustle.
While he was living at Sakumono, a suburb in Accra, one of his friends, who was still in Newtown, went to work for the late Akosua Dede, who was the leader of the “Agoro b3 sor” Concert party Group located at Free Pipe, Abeka Lapaz, and through a conversation with her, he recommended Agya Koo as a talented musician, and she was willing to work with him. Upon hearing the good news, Agya Koo and his friend went to see Dede, the sister of the late Captain Newman, and she gave him the green light to start training with her Concert Party Group.
At the time, Agya Koo relocated from Sakomono to Konkomba and was training with Agoro b3 sor” Concert Party Group. He became a member of the Concert Party Group and performed as a musician and an actor at the National Theater in Accra. His career began in 1995, and in 1997, he received his first award at the National Theatre for being a great entertainer. Later, Agya Koo starred in “Abaawa Mary,” his first movie owned by the late highlife musician and Scriptwriter Nana Kwame Ampedu, and another film produced by the Late Kwame Owusu Ansah.
Also, apart from Kokomba, Agya Koo lived in Taifa, Mamobi, and Kasoa and was still doing Concert Parties. At the National Theater in Accra, where they performed, they formed a group, and he suggested the name of the Group, Tete Mmofra. But after some time, the group collapsed, and he took it as a sole responsibility and built the group again. Later, he introduced the Tete Mmofra Film Production and Music Production. He also began starring in Kumawood movies after Director Samuel Nyamekye and other movie producers decided to work with him.
He also developed an interest in politics when former President Kufour was a flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, and he has campaigned for the NPP Party from when Kufuor was the President of Ghana till now. Agya Koo has starred in several Ghanaian movies and released songs as a musician. He has also won awards.
