Afua Asantewaa Sing-a-thon
In December 2023, Afua Asantewaa Aduonum decided to break the Guinness world record for the longest singing marathon by an Individual, which she received massive support from Ghanaians in person and on social media. According to her, she was inspired to break this record after watching Nigerian Chef Hilda Baci’s cook-a-thon. She felt that she could also do this as a woman and also to support the Ghanaian music industry.
After getting approved by the Guinness World Record to attempt to break the record for a singing marathon by an Individual, Asantewaa Aduonum decided to host the event in her living room. However, the Ministry of Tourism in Ghana saw this as a national assignment and decided the event should be hosted at the Akwaaba Village, next to the Hajj Airport roundabout in Accra.
Afua Asantewaa Aduonum started her sing-a-thon on Sunday, December 24, 2023, at 12 am and ended on the morning of Friday, December 29, 2023, with a singing record of 126 hours and 52 minutes. During the event, many Ghanaians, including actors and actresses, musicians, ministers, pastors, and Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, went to the Akwaaba Village to support Asantewaa.
The current record holder for the longest singing marathon by an Individual is an Indian. However, as Asantewaa has submitted the video evidence of her sing-a-thon to the GWR and is awaiting her results, many Ghanaians hope she breaks this record. One of Afua’s achievements after her sing-a-thon is that she was named a tourism ambassador in Ghana.
