Having an interest in serving your country is a good and patriotic thing. However, many people have wondered how to become a Military nurse in Ghana. In this article, you will find out what to do to become one.

Nurses are in the military too. They are referred to as Military Nurses. There are quite a number of roles and duties played by military Nurses in Ghana, and they can be found in the Military Hospital.

What does a military nurse do?

In Ghana, military nurses provide basic health care to military men and women. In addition, they extend a helping hand in health care to retired soldiers, active soldiers and their wives & husband, and the general public who visit the military hospital in Ghana.

How to become a Military Nurse in Ghana?

Since it’s about the military, a military Nurse goes through the same physical Ghana Armed Forces Training, and later, they are given more insights about the military Nurse profession they are trying to pursue.

Below are the Military Nurse Requirements by the Ghana Armed Forces.

General Eligibility

• Be a Ghanaian citizen by birth.

• Be of a good character.

• Not be less than 18 years and not more than 26 years by 30 March 2024 (Applicable to Regular Cadets Only).

• Be Not more than 30 years by 5 January 2024 (Short Service Applicants Only) or otherwise specified.

• Be medically fit by Ghana Armed Forces Standards.

• Must Pass the Pre joining fitness test.

• Not Bonded.

• Not be married (for Regular Officer Candidates Only),

• Be of minimum height of 1.68m (5’6″) for males and 1.60m (5’2″) for females.

Must have the following:

i. BECE, Six (6) Credits at BECE, including English and Mathematics.

ii. WASSCE, Six (6) Credits (Not less than C6), Including Core English, Core Mathematics, and Science.

iii. SSSCE, Six (6) Credits (not less than D), Including Core English and Core Mathematics.

iv. GCE ‘O’ & ‘A’ Level, Five (5) Credits (not less than 6), Including English and Mathematics at GCE ‘O’ Level and not less than D in three subjects and General Paper at GCE ‘A’ Level.

v. Must have a minimum of First Degree not below Second Class Lower. (NB. Transcripts and Attestations will not be accepted).

SHORT SERVICE COMMISSION (ARMY/NAVY/AIR FORCE)

1. ENGINEER CORPS: In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants must not be more than 30 years by 30 January 2024 and must have any of the following:

  1. Civil Engineering with Masters in Sewage Engineering.
  2. Mechanical Engineering with Masters in Building Services.
  3. Civil Engineering with Masters in Structural Engineering.
  4. MSc/MBA in Project Management with First Degree in any Building Environment Discipline.
  5. Applicants must have a minimum of two (2) years work experience in the relevant field of application and must be registered member of GHIE or requisite Professional body. Applicants must have good standing with a practicing Licence and Certificate from the regulating Professional Body.

2. SUPPLY BRANCH (Air Force Only):In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants must have a Masters Degree from a recognized University/institution in any of the following:

  • Accounting
  • Finance
  • Marketing
  • Procurement
  • Commerce 
  • Economics
  • Logistics and Supply Chain Management

3. MEDICAL AND DENTAL SPECIALISTS: In addition to general eligibility requirements, applicant must not be more 40 years of age for Medical and Dental Specialist and must have all of the following:

  • MB ChB/BDS or its equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Relevant post-graduate qualification to the level of Membership/Fellowship or its equivalent from an accredited College.
  • Permanent registration with the Medical and Dental Council (Ghana) and be in good standing.

4. MEDICAL OFFICERS AND DENTAL SURGEONS: In addition to general eligibility requirements, applicant must not be more 35 years of age and must have all of the following:

  •  MB ChB/BDS degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Permanent registration with the Medical and Dental Council (Ghana) and in good standing.
  • At least one (1) year post-permanent registration work experience.

5. NURSING OFFICERS: In addition to general eligibility requirements, applicant must have a BSc degree in Nursing from an accredited institution with a permanent registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Ghana.

6. SPECIALIZED/SPECIALIST NURSES: In addition to general eligibility requirements, applicant must not be more 35 years of age and must have all of the following:

  • BSc degree/Membership in any of the following specialties: Critical Care, ENT, Peri-Operative, Emergency Care, Paediatrics, Ophthalmic Nursing, Nephrology Nursing and other specialties.
  • At least one (1) year post-permanent registration working experience in a recognized health facility.
  • Must be in good standing with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana.

7. MIDWIFERY OFFICERS: Applicant must have either:

  • BSc degree in Midwifery from an accredited institution with at least two (2) years of practice post-permanent registration or
  • BSc degree in Midwifery from an accredited institution and a Diploma in Midwifery (RM) with at least one (1) year of practice post-permanent registration.
  • All must be in good standing with the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Ghana.

8. CERTIFIED REGISTERED ANAESTHETISTS (CRA): Applicant must have a BSc degree in Anaesthesia and an Advanced Diploma in Nurse Anaesthesia with at least one (1) year work experience post-permanent registration. Must be in good standing with the appropriate Regulatory body.

9. PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS (MEDICAL): Applicant must have a BSc degree and an Advanced Diploma in Physician Assistantship from an accredited institution with at least one (1) year working experience in an accredited health facility. Applicant must have a permanent registration with the Medical and Dental Council (Ghana) and be in good standing.

10. CHAPLAINS (ARMY/NAVY/AIR FORCE): In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants must not be more than 35 years of age by 30 January 2024 and have the following:

  • First Degree not below Second Class Lower (BA) in Theology or Religion from a recognised University/Theological Seminary/College.
  • An ordained Minister of the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, Evangelical Presbyterian, SDA and the Church of Pentecost and be recommended for commissioning into the Ghana Armed Forces by the Head of the Church.
  • A minimum of four (4) years pastoral working and probation/internship experience including two (2) years post ordination service in the pastoral field.
  • Ability to speak English and at least one of the main Ghanaian languages fluently.

11. IMAM: In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants must not be more than 35 years of age by 30 January 2024 and have the following:

  • First Degree not below Second Class Lower in Islamic Theology (Religion) from a recognized University, Islamic Institution, or College.
  • An Alim Phedeen (Islamic Theologian).
  • Fluent in both spoken Arabic and English Languages.
  • Ability to read and write good Arabic and English Languages.
  • Practised as Imam for four (4) years and be recognized by a recognised Islamic Religious Institution/Body in Ghana ie. The Office of the National Chief Imam, the Ghana Muslim Mission, the Muslim Representative Council, the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Islamic Research and the Ahmadiya Muslim Mission.
  • Recommended for commission into the Ghana Armed Forces by the Head of a recognized Islamic body in Ghana.

How to Apply to become a military Nurse in Ghana

Buy an e-voucher/scratch card at the cost of GH¢350 from the following designated post offices.

1. Greater Accra Region – Burma Camp, Accra North, GPO, Cantonments, Dansoman, Legon, Madina, TUC, Kaneshie, Ministries, Mamprobi, New Achimota, Tema Community 1, Tema Community 11.

2. Central Region – Cape Coast, Agona Swedru, Saltpond, Dunkwa-On-Offin, Winneba, Elmina, Apam.

3. Upper West Region – Wa, Lawra, Tumu.

4. Upper East Region – Bawku, Navrongo, Bolgatanga.

5. Ashanti Region – Kumasi Main, KNUST, Ashanti-Mampong, Bekwai-Ashanti, Konongo, Obuasi, Offinso, Ejura, Juaso, Akrokerri, Ejisu, Agogo.

6. Eastern Region – Koforidua, Nkawkaw, Mpraeso, Suhum, Akim Oda, Aburi, Asamankese, Akropong-Akuapem, Somanya, Akosombo, Nsawam.

7. Volta Region – Ho, Anloga, Keta, Hohoe, Kpando, Denu, Peki, Sogakope.

8. Western Region – Sekondi, Takoradi, Tarkwa, Axim.

9. Western North Region – Enchi, Sefwi Wiawso.

10. Bono East Region – Techiman, Kintampo.

11. Ahafo Region – Goaso, Duayaw Nkwanta.

12. Northern Region – Tamale, Education Ridge, Yendi.

13. North East Region – Nalerigu, Walewale.

14. Oti Region – Damba, Jasikan, Kadjebi.

15. Savannah Region – Bole, Damango.

16. Bono Region – Sunyani, Berekum, Bechem, Atebubu, Dormaa Ahenkro.

After you have purchased your e-voucher, below is how to apply for military nurse in Ghana.

  1. Scratch gently to reveal the “PIN” code. The scratch card can be used three times until a record is successfully submitted.
  2. Log on to the recruitment portal @ https://apply.mil.gh with any of the following browsers:
    1. Mozilla Firefox.
    2. Google Chrome.
  3. Read through the entry requirements thoroughly.
  4. Click on the Apply Now Tab to open the applicant authentication page.
  5. Enter your card Serial Numberand PIN code and select your preferred Arm of Service, type of commission, and click “Submit”.
  6. Enter your personal details and take note of the following from pages 1 to 3:
    • Page 1: Select your desired vacancy and provide all other required data.
    • Page 2: Upload a scanned copy of your passport-sized photograph of dimension ( 200 x 180 pixels ), enter a valid e-mail address, and personal mobile phone number in the format ( 233244123456 ) and enter any other required data.
    • Page 3: Enter the results of only the three required core subjects on your WASSCE/SSCE results slip, that is; CORE MATHEMATICS AND CORE ENGLISH. Enter your WASSCE or SSSCE Index number, WASSCE or SSSCE results slip Serial Number, and select a Tertiary Institution from the list of schools. Upload only scanned copies of the following; WASSCE or SSSCE Results Slip and First Degree/Certificate (Degree). NB: Each scanned document (Passport picture, WASSCE or SSSCE Results Slip, First Degree/Certificate) to be uploaded, should not exceed 1 (One) Megabyte and should be in JPEG picture format only.
  7. Click on the Preview button to see a summary page of all data provided. Read through this page carefully and click on the back button, if there are any modifications to be made.
  8. Click on the submit button and expect an instant e-mail and text message, which includes your unique system-generated Identification Number.
  9. Print and keep a copy of the generated report as you will be required to present it if you are shortlisted. However, if you lose your copy of the final report, go back to the recruitment portal, click on the Check Details Tab, enter your unique identification number sent to you by SMS/E-mail, and order a re-print.
  10. NB. YOU ARE TO KEEP THE USED ELECTRONIC VOUCHER AS IT WILL BE INSPECTED AT EVERY STAGE OF THE SELECTION PROCESS.
  11. Closing Date: Closing date for submission of all online applications is Sunday, December 3, 2023.
