How to become a Navy in Ghana
The three Arm of Service of the Ghana Armed Forces are the Navy in Ghana, Army, and Airforce. Each arm of service has special duties they perform, and specifically, in this article, we will look at everything you need to know about the Navy in Ghana.
Who is a Navy?
In a simple definition, the Navy is the branch of the Armed service of a country or state that conducts military operations at sea.
What work does the Navy do in Ghana?
The work of the Ghana Navy are categorized into three (3) main levels, and these are:
- Military Roles that include the projection of force or power function.
- Policing roles that involve coast guard functions and nation-building.
- Diplomatic roles, thus negotiation from the position of strength, manipulation, and prestige.

In line with these traditional roles, the constitution of Ghana stipulates that the Ghana Navy is responsible for the following:
- To deter any potential aggression against Ghana from the sea in cooperation with the Army and Air Force.
- To provide offensive naval capacity to land and air forces during operations and training.
- To maintain Ghana’s sovereignty over our territorial sea by conducting anti-piracy and anti-smuggling patrols.
- Conduct monitoring, controlling, surveillance, and inspection of fishery and exploration of operation within our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and other activities as may be identified from time to time.
- To prepare to assist in periods of National Disasters.
The traditional roles of the Ghana Navy could also be viewed as Wartime and Peacetime roles.
a. Wartime roles: The wartime roles that include defensive and offensive tasks are as follows:
- Insulating the Coast of Ghana against sea-borne invasion.
- Supporting the land and air forces in amphibious operations.
- Providing sea transportation for land forces.
b. Peacetime roles: During peacetime, the Ghana Navy generally performs policing duties. Emphasis is on the maintenance of Law and order in our territorial waters and the EEZ. These peacetime roles include the following:
- Maintenance of Ghana’s Maritime Territorial Integrity.
- Fisheries Protection Duties.
- Search and Rescue.
- Internal Security and Peace Keeping Operations.
- Security on the Lake Volta.
How do I become a Navy in Ghana?
For one to become a Navy in Ghana, the basis is that you meet the General and academic requirements, purchase a from a post office designated by the Ghana Armed Forces, and then go to the official Recruitment website of the Ghana Armed Forces to Apply. It’s simple, and we will take you through all of these.
Below are the requirements you need to become a Navy in Ghana:
General Eligibility
• Be a Ghanaian citizen by birth.
• Be of a good character.
• Be not less than 18 years of age and not more than 26 by March 30, 2024.
• Be Not more than 30 years by 5 January 2024 (Short Service Applicants Only) or otherwise specified.
• Be medically fit by Ghana Armed Forces Standards.
• Must Pass the Pre joining fitness test.
• Not Bonded.
• Not be married (for Regular Cadets Only),
• Be of minimum height of 1.68m (5’6″) for males and 1.60m (5’2″) for females.
Must have the following:
i. BECE, Six (6) Credits at BECE, including English and Mathematics.
ii. WASSCE, Six (6) Credits (Not less than C6), Including Core English, Core Mathematics, and Science.
iii. SSSCE, Six (6) Credits (not less than D), Including Core English and Core Mathematics.
iv. GCE ‘O’ & ‘A’ Level, Five (5) Credits (not less than 6), Including English and Mathematics at GCE ‘O’ Level and not less than D in three subjects and General Paper at GCE ‘A’ Level.
v. Must have a minimum of First Degree not below Second Class Lower. (NB. Transcripts and Attestations will not be accepted).
Academic Requirements – REGULAR CAREER OFFICER COURSE CANDIDATES
a. Executive Branch
In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants must have a First Degree, not below Second Class Lower, from a recognized University/institution in any of the following:
- Nautical Science
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Geography (Candidate should have done Elective Science at the Senior High School).
- Statistics
- Geology (Candidate should have done Elective Science at the Senior High School).
- Computer Engineering
- Computer Science
- Oceanography
- Geomatic Engineering
- Geodetic Engineering
- Hydrography.
- Aerospace Engineering.
b. Technical Branch
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must have a First Degree not below Second Class Lower from a recognized University/Institution in any of the following:
- Marine Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Marine Electrical/Electronic Engineering.
- Electrical Engineering
- Agricultural Engineering (Mechanization)
- Material Engineering
- Naval Architecture
- Civil Engineering
c. Supply Branch.
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must have a First Degree, not below Second Class Lower, from a recognized University or equivalent Professional institution in any of the following:
- BSc Administration (Accounting, Marketing,Banking & Finance).
- BA Administration (Accounting, Marketing,Banking & Finance).
- Business Administration
- Logistics and Supply Chain Management
- Procurement and Supply Chain Management
- BTech Procurement and Supply Chain Management

- Preference will be given to applicants with additional certificates in the following:
- Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) – Level 5.

d. Administration Branch.
In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must have a First Degree, not below Second Class Lower, from a recognized University or equivalent Professional institution in any of the following:
- BSc Administration (HR/Accounting/Marketing/Banking & Finance).
- BA Administration (HR/Accounting/Marketing/Banking & Finance).
- Business Administration.
- Public Administration.
- Economics
- Commerce.
- Port and Shipment Administration.
- Management Studies.
- Arts or Social Sciences.
- Preference will be given to applicants with additional certificate in Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administration (ICSA) – Final Part.
TRI-SERVICE CORPS – REGULAR CAREER OFFICER CANDIDATES (ARMY/NAVY/AIR FORCE)
1. ENGINEER CORPS: In addition to general eligibility criteria, applicants must have a First Degree not below Second Class Lower from a recognised University/Institution in any of the following:
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical/Renewable Energy Engineering.
- Mechanical (Building Services).
- BuildingTechnology/Quantity Surveying and Construction Economics/Construction Technology Management.
- Geomatic/Geodetic Engineering.
- Structural Engineering.
- Agricultural Engineering.
2. ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERS CORPS: In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants must have a First Degree not below Second Class Lower from a recognised University/Institution in any of the following:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical/Electronic Engineering.
- BTech (Automobile)
- Biomedical Engineering
- Material Engineering
3. ORDNANCE CORPS (BASE AMMUNITION DEPOT ONLY): In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants must have a First Degree not below Second Class Lower from a recognised University/Institution in any of the following:
4. EDUCATION CORPS: In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants must have a First Degree not below Second Class Lower from a recognised University/Institution in Language Translation/Interpretation in French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, German and Chinese.
5. BAND: In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants must have a First Degree not below Second Class Lower in Music from a recognised University/Institution. Applicants must also:
- Have appreciable knowledge in Composition/Orchestration.
- Be able to play at least one musical instrument.
- Be able to translate and transcribe music.
6. CATERING SCHOOL: In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants must have a First Degree not below Second Class Lower from a recognised University/Institution in any of the following:
- Bachelor of Education (Home Economics) – University of Cape Coast.
- Bachelor of Hospitality Management (GIMPA).
- Bachelor of Technology in Hospitality Management (Technical Universities).
- Bachelor of Catering and Hospitality in Education (University of Education Winneba).
7. HEALTH SERVICES ADMINISTRATORS: In addition to general eligibility requirements, applicant must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Administration (Health Services Option) from an accredited institution and must have completed the mandatory national service/Housemanship as a Health Services Administrator.
8. SENOGRAPHERS: In addition to general eligibility requirements, applicant must have a BSc degree in Sonography from an accredited institution with a permanent registration with the Allied Health Professions Council.
9. RESPIRATORY THERAPISTS: In addition to general eligibility requirements, applicant must have a BSc degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited institution with a permanent registration with the Allied Health Professions Council.
10. BIOMEDICAL SCIENTISTS: In addition to general eligibility requirements, applicant must have a BSc degree in Medical Laboratory Science/BSc Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution with a permanent registration with the Allied Health Professions Council.
11. RADIOGRAPHERS: In addition to general eligibility requirements, applicant must have a BSc degree in Radiography from an accredited institution with a permanent registration with the Allied Health Professions Council.
12. CERTIFIED REGISTERED ANAESTHETISTS: Applicant must have a BSc degree in Anesthesia from an accredited institution with a permanent registration with the Medical and Dental Council (Ghana).
13. PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICES (ENVIRONMENTAL): Applicant must have a BSc degree in Public Health (Environmental Health) from an accredited institution with a permanent registration with the Allied Health Professions Council.
14. DENTAL TECHNOLOGISTS: Applicant must have a BSc degree in Dental Technology from an accredited institution with a permanent registration with the Allied Health Professions Council.
SHORT SERVICE COMMISSION (ARMY/NAVY/AIR FORCE)
1. ENGINEER CORPS: In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants must not be more than 30 years by 30 January 2024 and must have any of the following:
- Civil Engineering with Masters in Sewage Engineering.
- Mechanical Engineering with Masters in Building Services.
- Civil Engineering with Masters in Structural Engineering.
- MSc/MBA in Project Management with First Degree in any Building Environment Discipline.
- Applicants must have a minimum of two (2) years work experience in the relevant field of application and must be registered member of GHIE or requisite Professional body. Applicants must have good standing with a practicing Licence and Certificate from the regulating Professional Body.
2. SUPPLY BRANCH (Air Force Only):In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants must have a Masters Degree from a recognized University/institution in any of the following:
- Accounting
- Finance
- Marketing
- Procurement
- Commerce
- Economics
- Logistics and Supply Chain Management
3. MEDICAL AND DENTAL SPECIALISTS: In addition to general eligibility requirements, applicant must not be more 40 years of age for Medical and Dental Specialist and must have all of the following:
- MB ChB/BDS or its equivalent from an accredited institution.
- Relevant post-graduate qualification to the level of Membership/Fellowship or its equivalent from an accredited College.
- Permanent registration with the Medical and Dental Council (Ghana) and be in good standing.
4. MEDICAL OFFICERS AND DENTAL SURGEONS: In addition to general eligibility requirements, applicant must not be more 35 years of age and must have all of the following:
- MB ChB/BDS degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution.
- Permanent registration with the Medical and Dental Council (Ghana) and in good standing.
- At least one (1) year post-permanent registration work experience.
5. NURSING OFFICERS: In addition to general eligibility requirements, applicant must have a BSc degree in Nursing from an accredited institution with a permanent registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Ghana.
6. SPECIALIZED/SPECIALIST NURSES: In addition to general eligibility requirements, applicant must not be more 35 years of age and must have all of the following:
- BSc degree/Membership in any of the following specialties: Critical Care, ENT, Peri-Operative, Emergency Care, Paediatrics, Ophthalmic Nursing, Nephrology Nursing and other specialties.
- At least one (1) year post-permanent registration working experience in a recognized health facility.
- Must be in good standing with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana.
7. MIDWIFERY OFFICERS: Applicant must have either:
- BSc degree in Midwifery from an accredited institution with at least two (2) years of practice post-permanent registration or
- BSc degree in Midwifery from an accredited institution and a Diploma in Midwifery (RM) with at least one (1) year of practice post-permanent registration.
- All must be in good standing with the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Ghana.
8. CERTIFIED REGISTERED ANAESTHETISTS (CRA): Applicant must have a BSc degree in Anaesthesia and an Advanced Diploma in Nurse Anaesthesia with at least one (1) year work experience post-permanent registration. Must be in good standing with the appropriate Regulatory body.
9. PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS (MEDICAL): Applicant must have a BSc degree and an Advanced Diploma in Physician Assistantship from an accredited institution with at least one (1) year working experience in an accredited health facility. Applicant must have a permanent registration with the Medical and Dental Council (Ghana) and be in good standing.
10. CHAPLAINS (ARMY/NAVY/AIR FORCE): In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants must not be more than 35 years of age by 30 January 2024 and have the following:
- First Degree not below Second Class Lower (BA) in Theology or Religion from a recognised University/Theological Seminary/College.
- An ordained Minister of the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, Evangelical Presbyterian, SDA and the Church of Pentecost and be recommended for commissioning into the Ghana Armed Forces by the Head of the Church.
- A minimum of four (4) years pastoral working and probation/internship experience including two (2) years post ordination service in the pastoral field.
- Ability to speak English and at least one of the main Ghanaian languages fluently.
11. IMAM: In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants must not be more than 35 years of age by 30 January 2024 and have the following:
- First Degree not below Second Class Lower in Islamic Theology (Religion) from a recognized University, Islamic Institution, or College.
- An Alim Phedeen (Islamic Theologian).
- Fluent in both spoken Arabic and English Languages.
- Ability to read and write good Arabic and English Languages.
- Practised as Imam for four (4) years and be recognized by a recognised Islamic Religious Institution/Body in Ghana ie. The Office of the National Chief Imam, the Ghana Muslim Mission, the Muslim Representative Council, the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Islamic Research and the Ahmadiya Muslim Mission.
- Recommended for commission into the Ghana Armed Forces by the Head of a recognized Islamic body in Ghana.

After you have purchased your e-voucher, below is how to apply for the Navy in Ghana.
- Scratch gently to reveal the “PIN” code. The scratch card can be used three times until a record is successfully submitted.

- Click on the Apply Now Tab to open the applicant authentication page.
- Enter your card Serial Number, and PIN code and select your preferred Arm of Service, type of commission, and click “Submit”.
- Enter your personal details and take note of the following from pages 1 to 3:
- Page 1: Select your desired vacancy and provide all other required data.
- Page 2: Upload a scanned copy of your passport-sized photograph of dimension ( 200 x 180 pixels ), enter a valid e-mail address, and personal mobile phone number in the format ( 233244123456 ) and enter any other required data.
- Page 3: Enter the results of only the three required core subjects on your WASSCE/SSCE results slip, that is; CORE MATHEMATICS AND CORE ENGLISH.
