Lil tjay was born in The Bronx, New York City, on April 30, 2001, to Ghanaian parents. He grew up in the Fordham Neighbourhood and was raised by a single parent, his mother, alongside his two younger siblings, in a roomy apartment. As a young kid, some things tjay did to have fun were playing basketball, the Manhunt childhood game, and the tyre game.

However, among his siblings, Tjay described himself as the problematic child. He engaged in school fights and petty robberies. At age 15, tjay was arrested and sentenced to a year at a youth detention center, where he began to write hip-hop/rap songs, which included one of his hits, “Resume,” which he released on SoundCloud.

Career

Growing up, Lil tjay wanted to be a public figure either by becoming a rapper or a singer. He grew up listening to rappers like 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, and Drake and singers like Rihanna. He started writing raps at a young age when he one day decided to stay in his crib. From there, Merritt began going to a studio not far from his Neighbourhood where his friends used to record Jolly songs, and he also started recording his songs in the studio and releasing them on SoundCloud.

In 2016, one of Merritt’s tracks, “Resume,” which he released at age sixteen, quickly began spreading online. In 2017, he worked with Lil Tut on the song “Don’t Gotta Explain.” In January 2018, after serving one year at the juvenile detention center, Merritt dropped the music video of his song “Resume” on Youtube. In February 2018, he released “Ride For You” on Soundcloud, which accumulated millions of streams.

In March 2018, Tjay competed and placed first at the Coast 2 Coast LIVE (NYC All Ages Edition).
Months later, on July 9, 2018, he dropped the single “Brothers,” which became the biggest hit song at the time and led to his signing to American record label Columbia Records. The same year, after Merritt’s breakout song, he dropped other songs like Long Time and New Flex. In December 2018, he released his debut EP, “No Comparison.”

In early 2019, Merritt was featured on Polo G’s song and that of PrettyMuch. Later, in August, he released his second External play, “F.N.,” and his first album, “True 2 Myself,” on October 11, 2019. Merritt now has three EPs to his credit, the third one titled “State of Emergency,” which he released on May 8, 2020, and two albums, the second titled “Destined 2 Win,” which he dropped on April 2, 2021.
