Wendy Shay is the stage name of Wendy Asiamah Addo, a Ghanaian Afropop, afrobeat singer, and songwriter. She is also a philanthropist who has established the Shay Foundation.

She is signed to RuffTown Records, a known music record label in Ghana owned by Bullet, real name Ricky Nana Agyemang. Wendy has been signed to this record label since 2018 and has released hit songs like Uber Driver, Survivor, Stevie Wonder ft. Shatta Wale, and Masakra under the label.

Wendy Shay was born in Accra, Ghana, on February 20, 1996. She is 28 years old and comes from Obo Kwahu in the Eastern Region. The songstress grew up in Stuttgart, Germany. She lost her father, David Akwasi Asiamah when she was two years old, and she is the eldest child of her parents. She has a younger sister, called Joycelyn Addo, from the same parents and two stepsiblings from her mother’s side.

David Akwasi Asiamah and Madam Janet, also called Obaapa Kakyire,
are the parents of Wendy Shay. Obaapa Kakyire is still alive and lives in Germany, but David Asiamah is late. He died when Wendy was two years old, and at the time, his wife, Obaapa, was carrying their second child, thus Wendy’s younger sister Joycelyn.

The self-acclaimed Queen of Ghana music attended Morning Star School and St. Martin de Porres School in Dansoman, Accra, during her early life in Ghana. She continued her education in Stuttgart, from Class 7/Grade 7, when she joined her mum in Germany at age 12-13. Along the line, She enrolled in a music school in Bernhausen, Germany, and after High School, she proceeded to Nursing College. Wendy has a nursing certificate and experience as a midwife. In 2021, She graduated from the Concord Business College in Accra, Ghana, with an HND in Business and Marketing Management.

Career

At a young age, Wendy Shay knew she would become a musician because she was a good singer and the fact that she came from a musical home. Wendy’s grandmother (mother’s mother) loved to sing and play a particular musical instrument, and the legendary Ghanaian highlife Nana Kwame Ampedu was also a family member. So when she started schooling in Germany, she registered for a music school in Bernhausen, where she learned how to hold a microphone to perform and other stagecraft. Shay was just 14 years old when she received her music training till she turned 18 years old.

In 2016, after completing Nursing College in Germany, Wendy Shay did a one-year internship as a midwife in a Hospital in Germany even though she studied General nursing. After the internship, Wendy decided to start her professional music journey. She began by recording Demos. In 2018, through her Godfather, Mr. Kwesi Ernest, She became close to Bullet, her current manager and she got signed onto his record label, RuffTown Records, in Early 2018 after the demise of Ebony Reigns. Wendy released her debut single, “Uber Driver,” under RuffTown in June 2018. The song became an instant hit, and its music video accumulated more views on YouTube within a month. After her single, she has dropped over fifteen songs under the record label, and so far, she has released three albums and one External Play (EP)
